A motorcyclist was killed Monday in a single-vehicle accident in Palm Springs, authorities said.

The crash happened about 11:10 a.m. near District Center Drive and Gene Autry Trail, according to Riverside County sheriff's officials.

The motorcyclist was traveling south on Gene Autry Trail at a high rate of speed, lost control and crashed, hitting the curb.

The motorcyclist died at the scene. No one else was injured.

The victim has not been identified.

Patrol car flips over in Malibu; 2 deputies airlifted to hospital.

Two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies were airlifted to a  hospital Sunday after their patrol car overturned in Malibu, authorities said.

About 6:35 p.m., the deputies were driving along Kanan Dume Road near Latigo Canyon Road when their patrol car did not handle a turn properly, struck a guardrail and flipped over, Sgt. Edward Sheridan said.

The two deputies -- a man and a woman -- were airlifted to UCLA Medical Center in moderate condition, Sheridan said.

Kanan Dume Road was shut down in both directions at Latigo Canyon Road, and the California Highway Patrol issued a SigAlert to warn motorists.

The deputies were responding to reports of a violent, mentally ill man who was throwing rocks at vehicles near Trancas Canyon Road and Pacific Coast Highway, about 10 miles from the scene of the accident, Sheridan said.

The man was taken into custody by a different squad of deputies and was  undergoing a health evaluation, Sheridan said.

American Airlines flight returns safely to LAX after reporting issue in cockpit.

An American Airlines flight headed to Boston has landed safely at Los Angeles International Airport after reporting a problem in the cockpit.

Ian Gregor, an FAA spokesman, said the Boeing 737 reported equipment issues after leaving LAX en route to Boston's Logan International Airport.

It appears a cargo indicator light was faulty, airline spokesman Kent Powell said. The plane was taxied to the gate.

Flight 202 was carrying 146 passengers and six crew members when it departed LAX at 1:10 p.m. and it landed just after 2 p.m.

No one onboard the plane was hurt.

The passengers and crews members boarded another plane and continued to Boston.

4 firefighters injured when roof caves in during Cudahy casino fire.

Four Los Angeles County firefighters were injured when they fell through the roof of a vacant casino during a two-alarm fire in Cudahy, officials said Friday.

The fire was reported at the Club Caribe Casino in the 7600 block of Atlantic Avenue about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, where crews arrived and found plumes of black smoke and flames shooting through the 3,000-square-foot building.

Four firefighters were on the roof, cutting holes for ventilation, when it caved in about midnight, said supervising fire dispatcher Ed Pickett.

Three firefighters suffered cuts and bruises but were otherwise fine. They were treated at the scene and released. A fourth firefighter suffered unspecified burns and was taken to a hospital, Pickett said.

Crews extinguished the blaze about 2 a.m.; its cause was under investigation.

In March, a Fresno firefighter was critically injured when he fell during a house fire as the roof collapsed beneath him, dropping him into a pit of flames.

Woman who shot at police robot in custody after 22-hour standoff.

Authorities engaged in an armed standoff with an elderly Woodland Hills woman tried tear gas, a flash grenade and a crisis negotiator. When they sent a robot to slowly approach her, she shot at it. 

But finally, after 22 hours, the woman who had held a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team at bay outside her mobile home since early Thursday was taken into custody.

Sometime overnight the woman, whose name and age have not been released, crawled underneath her home, officials said. At about 3:30 a.m. on Friday, SWAT team members pulled her out, they said.

“It’s very unusual, but we’re just happy that we’re able to bring this to a peaceful resolution,” said Lt. A.J. Rotella of the Sheriff’s Department's Malibu station. “No one wants to see an elderly woman, for whatever reason she acted this way, no one wanted to see her get seriously hurt.”

The incident began when deputies went to the mobile home park in the 4200 block of Topanga Canyon Boulevard about 5:30 a.m. Thursday

1 killed in West Hollywood 3-alarm fire.

A homeless man died early Thursday after being pulled from a three-alarm fire inside an abandoned building in West Hollywood.

Los Angeles County firefighters were called to the 9000 block of West Santa Monica Boulevard just before midnight when someone reported seeing smoke and flames shooting from an abandoned commercial space across from the Troubadour nightclub, said fire Inspector Chris Reade.

The building looked like it had long been abandoned, Reade said. Firefighters encountered boarded-up windows and “packrat-type” conditions inside, which made it difficult to get in, he said.

When firefighters did finally make it inside, they found a man in cardiac arrest. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, authorities said.

The building appeared to be a homeless encampment with multiple residents, Reade said.

"No other homeless persons are coming back to the scene to claim their stuff. We were hoping someone would so we could get some more information," Reade said.

Gunmen in Westlake triple-shooting claimed gang ties, police say.

Three people were shot during a carjacking in the Westlake neighborhood of Los Angeles early Wednesday, police said.

The gunfire broke out about 3 a.m. at Coronado and Temple streets when two men identified themselves as gang members to three men in a white Chevrolet Cavalier who were dropping off a friend, LAPD officials said.

The pair “claimed” a gang, said something to the group, opened fire with a revolver and stole their car, police officials said.

One of the victims was struck in the arm, said Officer Liliana Preciado. Another was shot in the leg and the third was grazed on the forehead, according to KNBC-TV.

The carjackers sped off in the car but ditched it a few blocks later, police said. There have been no arrests.

The victims ran to a gas station, where paramedics picked them up and took them to a hospital. The three wounded are in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Suspected car thief falls from second-story window after police chase.

A suspected car thief was hospitalized early Tuesday after he bailed from the car, tried to break into a second-story apartment in Pico-Union, was shot with a beanbag gun and fell out of a window, police said.

The chase began downtown at 8^th Street and Maple Avenue about 2:30 a.m. when LAPD officers tried to pull over a vehicle because it had paper license plates and might have been stolen, said Sgt. David Martinez.

Video of the chase showed paper covering only part of the car’s actual license plate. 

The suspect led officers on a chase that went on the 60, 710 and 110 freeways and hit speeds as high as 120 mph, NBC4 reported.

“He was everywhere,” said LAPD Officer Liliana Preciado.

The chase ended in Pico-Union near Albany and Connecticut streets.

Four men who were inside the car ran, Preciado said. They tried to break into nearby homes but three were quickly caught, KTLA reported.

San Diego police officer wounded in shooting.

A San Diego police officer was shot and wounded Sunday morning in the Kearny Mesa neighborhood.

The officer was taken to a hospital with a wound to her neck or shoulder, police said. Her name was not released.

Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said the officer was shot at least once. The wound is not life-threatening, she said.

Lt. Mike Hastings of the homicide squad said that the incident occured around 7:40 a.m. with a high-speed freeway chase involving several officers. The driver was considered a suspect in a string of shootings at businesses in recent weeks, police said.

The driver left his car and fired at least once at officers. Two officers returned fire, killing him, Hastings said.

 "The officer is in good spirits, doing well and appreciates the good wishes of the entire community," Zimmerman told reporters outside the hospital.

The wounded officer is a five-year veteran and assigned as a training officer. She had a trainee with her during the incident, Zimmerman said.

Two killed in one-car crash on 60 Freeway in City of Industry.

Two people were killed early Saturday morning when the car they were riding in veered off the 60 Freeway in the City of Industry and crashed into a tree, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 2:40 a.m. Saturday on the eastbound 60, just west of the 605 Freeway, authorities said.

Diego Martinez, a 24-year-old Ontario resident, was driving “at a high rate of speed” and lost control of the Toyota Scion for unknown reasons, according to the California Highway Patrol. The car went across all lanes of the freeway before colliding with the tree.

Two of the passengers, a 49-year-old man from Baldwin Park and a 23-year-old woman from Ontario, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Martinez and a third passenger, a 45-year-old woman from Ontario, suffered major injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. None of the passengers were identified.

No arrests were made, according to the CHP. No other details were available.

L.A. Unified after-school coach is suspected of molesting nine girls.

A coach for a Los Angeles Unified School District after-school program was charged Friday with multiple felony counts of committing lewd acts on a child, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said.

Ronnie Lee Roman, 42, of San Fernando, worked as a Youth Services coach for Beyond the Bell, an after-school program offered in some elementary and middle schools, said Det. Joe Rios, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department. He was arrested Wednesday.

Roman is accused of inappropriately touching seven girls at Cahuenga Elementary School in Koreatown between January 2012 and September 2014, the district attorney’s office said.

Roman also allegedly molested two girls at Vine Elementary School in Hollywood between August 2001 and July 2002, prosecutors said.

All of the students were between the ages of 7 and 11, according to the district attorney’s office.

Crash shuts down most of 57 Freeway; 1 dead, 7 hospitalized.

Several lanes of the 57 Freeway near Chapman Avenue in Fullerton were shut down late Wednesday evening after a multiple-vehicle crash involving a big rig, authorities said.

Shortly after 7 p.m., a tire on the big rig blew out, causing the truck to strike the center divider on the southbound side of the freeway and roll over into the northbound lanes, said Officer Jon Latosquin of the California Highway Patrol. Diesel fuel from the rig spilled onto the roadway.

At least seven other vehicles then collided, according to a spokeswoman for Metro Cities Fire Authority.

Investigators said the truck was hauling a forklift, which flew into the air after becoming dislodged by the impact, KTLA-TV Channel 5 reported.

Seven people were transported to trauma centers, fire officials said. At least one person was pronounced dead, according to the CHP.

All but two southbound lanes of the freeway were shut down. Four lanes on the northbound side remained open.

Passenger's face slashed on Metro bus after argument, authorities say.

An argument aboard a Metro bus Wednesday morning in the South Bay area ended with one man slashing another in the face, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

The argument broke out about 6:15 a.m. on the 210 bus line while it was northbound on Crenshaw Boulevard near Rosecrans Avenue on the border of Hawthorne and Gardena, said Lt. John Sullivan of the department’s transit service bureau.

The confrontation led to one man pulling out a knife or box cutter and slashing another man in the face, then running off, Sullivan said.

Paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was being treated for his wound, Sullivan said.

The attacker was last seen running north on Crenshaw, Sullivan said. KTLA-TV reported that a man was detained in connection with the attack about 7 a.m.

2 wounded in Isla Vista shooting were UCSB students; suspects arrested.

Authorities identified two men Tuesday involved in an attack at an Isla Vista apartment near UC Santa Barbara that left two university students wounded by gunfire.

Santa Barbara County sheriff’s officials said residents subdued James Joshua Taylor, 22, of Lompoc as he tried to flee Monday night after the shooting in the 6500 block of Sabado Tarde Road.

Taylor and a second man, Jose Guadalupe Gutierrez, 19, of Goleta, allegedly confronted a pair of UCSB students inside an Isla Vista apartment about 7:15 p.m., robbed them, shot them and fled.

Gutierrez knew the two students but authorities wouldn’t describe how. He and Taylor allegedly shot the students – one in the abdomen, the other in the left side of the chest – during a fight inside the apartment.

While Taylor was held by residents until deputies arrived, Gutierrez got away. He allegedly took himself to a hospital in Goleta and told medical staff there he’d been in a car accident at UCSB.

10,000 gallons of water flood West Hollywood after main pipe breaks.

A road in West Hollywood remained closed early Monday while crews patched up a water main break, the latest rupture in the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s aging infrastructure.

The 12-inch main ruptured before 5 a.m. and gushed water down the 1200 block of North Formosa Avenue near Santa Monica Boulevard on Sunday morning, flooding a parking garage and nearby homes, LADWP officials said.

The break sent more than 10,000 gallons of water into the street,CBS2 reported.

More than two dozen customers were without service for more than half a day Sunday before service was ultimately restored. LADWP officials said the area around where the break occurred will be coned off for the next few days while the street is repaved; the flood created a large sinkhole in the road and sent a river of water into the area.

Road rage incident leads to Mercedes passenger's death, police say.

A passenger in a Mercedes Benz was killed in Beverly Hills on Friday night when the driver crashed while fleeing the scene of a minor accident, authorities said.

After being involved in a minor collision with a taxi at Pico Boulevard and Swall Drive, the white four-door Mercedes sped away, a witness told investigators.

When the Mercedes reached Olympic Boulevard at about 11:58 p.m., it struck an Audi SUV, several trees and a concrete wall, the Beverly Hills Police Department said in a news release. Investigators believe that the female passenger who was killed was not wearing a seat belt.

Police called the Mercedes' run-in with the taxi a road rage incident.

No one in the Audi was injured. The Mercedes driver and two other passengers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Investigators believe drugs or alcohol may have been involved.

Fatal deputy-involved shooting in Cerritos began with suspicious person report.

The investigation into the first fatal deputy-involved shooting in Cerritos in nearly a decade continued Friday, with detectives combing a vehicle involved in the shooting for evidence.

The shooting occurred Thursday afternoon in the 17200 block of Pires Avenue, just a couple of blocks away from where the deputy’s investigation began on Beach Street.

Deputies had been called to the area after a resident reported a woman had knocked on her door and asked for someone who didn’t live there. The woman got into a car and left, but the resident took down the license plate and car’s description and gave it to deputies when they arrived to take a report.

Officials say deputies found the car around the corner on Palm Place parked along a curb with the woman standing outside the car.

One deputy detained her while another checked the car, the department said in a news release.

Hail, rain, snow and wind whip Southern California.

Drivers in Southern California’s mountains were told to use tire chains and urban commuters were cautioned to slow down Friday as a spring storm dropped rain and snow from Santa Barbara to San Diego counties.

The storm moved in Thursday night, bringing more than half an inch of rain to Whittier and nearly as much to Pomona and Claremont, where the brief, heavy downpours were mixed with hail, the National Weather Service reported.

The storm was stronger in Orange County, where quick downpours in fire-scarred areas could trigger mudflows. More than an inch of rain fell in Silverado Canyon, but no incidents have been reported, the weather service said.

Snow was below 5,000 feet in the mountains, forcing drivers to use chains to get through some windy passes.

“It’s kind of like a normal winter storm, but it’s a little bit late,” said meteorologist James Brotherton. “By midday today, just about everywhere will have seen some rain.”

Gunman on roof in South L.A. shot, wounded by elite LAPD crime detail.

Officers in the Los Angeles Police Department’s elite Metropolitan Division,  recently deployed to the city’s most violent areas, shot a man armed with a gun on a roof in South L.A., authorities said.

Officers with the LAPD’s crime suppression detail were patrolling in the 5800 block of Broadway before midnight Tuesday night when they tried to stop a pedestrian, said Officer Liliana Preciado.

The officers are part of a select unit within the LAPD that Chief Charlie Beck recently deployed to try to suppress an increase in violent crime.

When they tried to stop the pedestrian, a man in his 20s, about 11:50 p.m., he ran, Preciado said. Police officials did not immediately say why officers had tried to stop him.

Officers briefly lost sight of the man but spotted him again moments later on a second-story roof pointing a gun at them, Preciado said.
