Arriving within minutes, police
confronted a man with a knife outside the business, officials said, and he
refused police commands to drop the weapon.
An officer fired at least once. The man
was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The dead man was described only as 42

Twenty-three years ago, parts of Los
Angeles looked something like Baltimore has in the last week, only more so. The
toll in Los Angeles, after four smoldering days of mayhem that began April 29
following the acquittal of police officers in the Rodney King beating, was 53
dead, 2,000 injured, 11,000 arrested and a billion dollars in damage.
Fast-forward to the scenes of burning
buildings in Baltimore, where rioting followed a funeral Monday for a
25-year-old man who died of a severed spine sustained while in police custody.
The questions about whether police and firefighters could have done more to
quell looting and destruction were the same ones asked back between April 29
and May 3 in Los Angeles, with no good answers forthcoming.
There’s another similarity between Los
Angeles and Baltimore: Controversial use of police force on a man of color was
the plunger on a powder keg decades in the making.

Despite the
above arrests and prosecutions, other statistics point to major reductions in
the amount of crime being committed where there are cameras installed. This is
why CCTV is seen by many as the best system for the deterrent and detection of
Crime. We are sure that you would wish to avoid having to catch those who are
perpetrating crime against your organisation. Generally, once a Camera system
is installed, it will only be fools who attempt to perpetrate offences within
its field of view. These are often caught but for the majority it will provide
a very high level of deterrence. Security cameras best way for stop crime.

A Bay Area teen who was arrested on
suspicion of stabbing to death his best friend’s sleeping 9-year-old brother
apparently confessed to the crime in a jailhouse interview Monday, according to
reports.
William Shultz, 18, told a reporter with the Contra Costa
Times that he stabbed Jordon Almgren in the predawn hours on Sunday, saying, “I
wanted to see what it was like to take a life before someone tried to take
mine.”
Almgren’s family took him from their
home in Discovery Bay, about 60 miles east of San Francisco, to a
county hospital, where he died.
After inadvertently
slashing himself in the wrist during the stabbing, Shultz told the paper,
he drove to the hospital for treatment. There, a nurse linked him to news
reports about Almgren’s death and alerted authorities, sheriff's officials
said.
He was arrested at the hospital and
is being held at a Contra Costa County jail on $1-million bail, sheriff's
officials said.

Flames tore through a vacant
three-story building west of downtown Los Angeles on Sunday night, authorities
said.
The fire was first reported around 10:30
p.m. at 1201 Huntley Drive in the Westlake neighborhood, said Los Angeles
Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey. It was initially reported as the 1100
block of West Third Street.
About 90 firefighters battled the
"very heavy fire," which was limited to the top floor of the building
and knocked down about 45 minutes later, Humphrey said. The building is located
on a hillside, and the lower two floors are partly underground.
The building is currently unoccupied,
and there was no immediate threat to those nearby, Humphrey said.
Fire crews planned to stay at the scene
overnight, he said, and officials will resume the investigation Monday to
try to determine the cause of the blaze.

A fire Friday in a Los Feliz home has led to an investigation
into a possible marijuana-growing operation.
The blaze, in the 3900 block of West
Sunset Drive, began around 6 p.m. when about 100 small butane canisters
ignited, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
An attached garage became fully engulfed
in flames, which then spread to a bedroom of the three-story hillside home,
said department spokesman Erik Scott, who tweeted out details of the incident.
Two vehicles also burned.
Authorities reported no injuries.
At the scene, firefighters discovered
dozens of marijuana plants. News footage shot from overhead revealed what
appeared to be marijuana plants in an empty swimming pool, which had apparently
been covered by a tarp. The plants in the pool area were not burned.
It took more than 50 firefighters to
knock down the blaze and prevent it from spreading across the hillside
neighborhood.
Early reports from the scene talked of
hearing explosions from inside the residence.

Police looking for 'child
predator' accused of abducting toddler in Gardena.
Police released surveillance video Friday showing the car of a suspected
child predator, who they say abducted a 2-year-old girl in Gardena, then
dropped her off 10 miles away in Cudahy.
Investigators are now searching for the man who they say was seen circling
the neighborhood several times before he kidnapped the girl about 4:55 p.m. at
a car wash near the intersection of 149th Street and Western Avenue.
Police are asking for the public’s help in finding the man who abducted
the girl, who was hurt during the kidnapping.
“This man is a child predator,” Gardena police Lt. Steve Prendergast
said Friday. “He is out there and we need the public’s help to find him.”
Her mother
told police she was at the self-service car wash, and she heard her daughter
scream moments before she disappeared.
Her disappearance prompted an immediate police response as
officers and family searched frantically for the girl.
Then around 8 p.m., the man dropped off the girl in Cudahy near the
intersection of Atlantic Street and Santa Ana Avenue, police said.

Those
who use the traffic app Waze in Los Angeles will receive alerts about
hit-and-runs and abducted children as part of a new data-sharing partnership
between the company and the city, Mayor Eric Garcetti said Tuesday.
Several government departments will
give Waze information about construction, film shoots, road closures and
other events affecting L.A.’s streets. In return, the city will receive
real-time data about traffic patterns and roadway conditions, including reports
submitted by users, officials said.
The app’s users – which number about 1.3
million in the city – will also receive notifications about nearby hit-and-run
incidents, which could motivate them to report what they saw to police,
officials said.
The data exchange could eventually be
linked to the city’s 311 hotline system, which allows residents to submit
requests for services like graffiti removal or street light repairs, officials
said.

A shooting death on the front lawn of a Baldwin Park home
triggered a standoff that ended early Tuesday with an L.A. County Sheriff’s
Department SWAT team taking several men into custody, officials said.
Deputies began wrapping up the scene in
the 13200 block of Earl Avenue about 5 a.m., the department’s Special
Enforcement Bureau tweeted.
The team had surrounded a home there
after getting word that the two potential gunmen who had shot a 37-year-old man
to death on nearby Cosbey Street were inside, authorities said.
The shooting occurred after 8 p.m.
Monday in the 3800 block of Cosbey, the Sheriff’s Department said in a
statement.
“All we know is the individual walked
out of his house and was outside on the lawn for a couple of minutes and
several shots were heard,” Lt. Dave Coleman told KTLA.
The people inside the Earl Avenue home
voluntarily surrendered to the SWAT team, KTLA reported. No one has been
arrested and the investigation is ongoing, officials said.

14 injured in 'major' gas line explosion in Fresno.
Fourteen people were rushed to the
hospital with burns after a major gas line explosion near the Fresno County
Sheriff’s Office gun range Friday, a fire official said.
The blast occurred behind the range
about 2:30 p.m. when a county worker leading a team of inmates constructing a
dirt road accidentally struck the gas line, said Fresno Fire Department
spokesman Pete Martinez.
Thirty-five firefighters quickly subdued
the blaze, and Pacific Gas & Electric cut off the gas supply to the line,
Martinez said.
The county worker leading the team and
at least one of the inmates were critically injured in the explosion, which
sent a fireball 100 feet into the sky, authorities said. The inmates were part
of a work program at the Fresno County Jail, Martinez said.
“I heard a whirring sound like a
helicopter, then two booms and fire,” said Mark Price, who witnessed the blast.
Spencer Olson was drilling for water
nearby.

and four others injured after gunfire erupted Thursday in a Westside
neighborhood.
The deceased was identified as
27-year-old Justin Aguilar, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.
His city of residence was unknown.
No arrests have been made in the
shootings, which briefly prompted a citywide tactical alert, said Officer
Rosario Herrera of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Shots rang out about 3 p.m. in the Palms
neighborhood near Vinton Avenue and Woodbine Street. When officers arrived,
they found two men, one wounded one dead.
About a block away, gunfire erupted in a
second shooting and a third man was injured, police said.
Minutes later, a third shooting occurred
about a half-mile away outside a 7-Eleven near Overland Avenue and National
Boulevard.
Rafael Rocha, who saw the ambush unfold,
said a group of men fired from across the shopping center parking lot at two

A Culver City man has been arrested on suspicion of raping a
15-year-old girl who was reported missing three weeks ago and was found Monday,
Los Angeles police said.
Samuel Robert Duran Jr., 33, was
detained for questioning Monday, formally booked on suspicion of multiple
counts of rape at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday and was being held in lieu of $8-million
bail, according to records released by the Los Angeles Police Department.
The girl vanished March 24 after leaving
her Mar Vista home and was reunited with her mother Monday, Los Angeles Police
Lt. John Jenal said.
The Times previously named the girl in
reporting on her disappearance. Since police have booked Duran on suspicion of
raping her, The Times is adhering to its policy not to identify victims of
alleged sexual assault.
She was the subject of an intensive
search by Los Angeles police and the FBI, in cooperation with her family, and
those efforts received widespread coverage by the media, including The Times.

A man accused of stealing a lime-green
taxi and leading police on a two-hour pursuit through Inglewood and South
Los Angeles could face several charges, police said Monday.
Derrick Bogar, 36, was arrested Friday
afternoon when an armored SWAT vehicle performed a "pursuit
intervention technique" -- or PIT maneuver -- and stopped the taxi at
103rd and Alameda streets in Watts, Los Angeles police said.
It was only the second time the
department had used its armored vehicles to perform a PIT maneuver, police
officials said Monday.
Bogar was arrested on suspicion of
carjacking but could face other charges such as reckless driving and evading
police, said Lt. Louis Paglialonga, who is investigating the incident.
Paglialonga said part of the ongoing investigation would include a review of
the television footage that captured the chase.
Online jail records showed Bogar was
scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

A federal jury on Friday cleared a Los
Angeles man of drug and gun-related charges, finding against prosecutors in a
case involving a controversial tactic used by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives that lures suspects into plotting a robbery of a
fictitious stash house invented by federal agents.
Jurors found Antuan Dunlap, 25, not
guilty of drug conspiracy, gun usage and firearm possession charges after
deliberating less than a day. The panel deadlocked on a fourth count of
robbery. Prosecutors have the option of bringing a new trial against Dunlap on
the robbery charge.
The case against Dunlap had previously
been thrown out by a U.S. District judge who made the extraordinary ruling that
the federal agents’ actions in the case amounted to “outrageous government
misconduct” when they made up a nonexistent crime opportunity and tempted
poor people with the promise of a quick payday.

A fire ripped through part of a
commercial building near downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, briefly
trapping two people inside an office until firefighters made a rescue,
authorities said.
The blaze erupted about 7:45 p.m. on the
fifth floor of a six-story building in the 1500 block of West Olympic
Boulevard, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.
Flames burst through the roof after
spreading through the southwest corner of the building, which was constructed
in 1966 and lacked a sprinkler system, fire officials said.
At the peak of the blaze in the Westlake
neighborhood, 170 firefighters were at the scene, and the Fire Department
deployed about six retractable ladders to rescue anyone stranded inside the
building, Humphrey said. At least two people were shown on video footage
climbing down from the building.
At least one person was injured, but
officials said his medical condition was not life-threatening, and no further
details were available.
