A 56-year-old Encinitas man was shot and killed by a San Diego County sheriff's deputy Friday after twice pointing a shotgun at the deputy, officials said.
Deputies had responded to an emergency call that the man was holding a shotgun while sitting in a grassy area near his home on Shadytree Lane.
The 911 caller indicated there was "a history of weapons" at the home and that deputies had responded to a call there earlier in the week.
A deputy ordered the man to drop the shotgun, but he refused and said that he wanted the deputy to shoot him, Lt. John Maryon said.
When the man pointed the shotgun at the deputy, the deputy fired several rounds from his AR-15 rifle. The man fell to the ground but again tried to point the shotgun at the deputy, who fired again.
The man, whose name was not released, was declared dead at the scene. No deputies were injured.

The deputy who fired the fatal shots is described as being with the Sheriff's Department for less than five years.
